CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? It took a pair of three-set wins, but Austin Peay State University claimed its season's first win, 5-2, over Cumberland, Wednesday. The Govs improve to 1-1 overall.

In their season opener against Lipscomb, the Govs struggled in the doubles competition and could not recover. That problem was remedied against Cumberland, as Austin Peay swept the point, winning no match by more than three games. In fact, Bret Shaw and Dusty Brady won 8-7 at No. 3 over Deven Crotzer and Johnnes Jonsson.

The Govs also continued their strong play at the top of the lineup in singles action. Resiliency was the theme at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, with both junior Leonardo Locatelli and senior Lucas De Brito overcoming adversity to win three-set matches. Those wins turned out to be the key to victory for the Govs.

Newcomer Renan Bezerra picked up a straight-set win at No. 3 singles against Felipe Oliveira and Francisco La Puente won easily over Kody Horne at No. 4.

Austin Peay returns to action, next Wednesday, when it hosts North Alabama.
