CLARKSVILE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team scored its runs in two bunches en route to a 7-4 non-conference victory against Western Kentucky, Tuesday night, at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay (15-20) scored four runs in the second inning and three runs in the fifth to account for all of its scoring. Designated hitter Daniel Baggett belted his season's third home run, a three-run shot, in the third. Third baseman Greg Bachman and catcher Trey Lucas each had RBIs in the fifth.
Western Kentucky (25-10) grabbed the early momentum after converting a triple play in the bottom of the first. The Hilltoppers capitalized in the second, scoring the game's first run on shortstop Terrence Dayleg's single. However, WKU left the bases loaded and ultimately stranded 12 runners on base. Western Kentucky scored a run in the fifth and one of its two runs in the sixth courtesy Austin Peay balks.
Governors starter Jeremy Dobbs (2-2) picked up the victory after holding Western Kentucky to two runs on three hits over four innings. Ricky Marshall ? APSU's third pitcher ? recorded his season's third save after 3.1 innings of scoreless relief in which he allowed only three hits and struck out two. Baggett finished the night with two hits and three RBI.
WKU starter Craig Stem (1-3) was tagged for the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over three-plus innings. The Hilltoppers used eight pitchers in the contest. Offensively, third baseman Wade Gaynor went 3-for-4 while Dayleg had the team's lone RBI.
Austin Peay makes a quick one-game road trip when it meets Memphis in a 6:30 p.m., Wednesday contest at Pringles Park in Jackson.
