Govs road woes continue in loss at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The road remained unkind for Austin Peay State University's baseball team as it was unable to find a timely hit in a 7-1 loss to Belmont, Wednesday night, at Greer Stadium. The Govs have lost 13 of their 15 road games this season.

Austin Peay (17-23) had plenty of opportunities in the contest, stranding 13 runners on base ? including leaving the bases loaded in the first, sixth and seventh frames. But only once were they able to get the hit they needed to light up the scoreboard.

In the first, the Govs loaded the bases with one out courtesy two walks and a hit batsman, but could not capitalize. Double plays kept the Govs scoreless in the second and third innings.

The Govs next good opportunity arose in the sixth when they loaded the bases again with one out, sandwiching first baseman Matt Kole's single between two walks. However,  strike out and fielder's choice stopped their momentum.

Austin Peay finally broke up the shutout in the seventh, after the first two batters reached via a base on balls. The Govs got a deep fly out to advance the lead runner to third and then saw their hopes dim when a strikeout pushed the inning to two outs. However, catcher Trey Lucas' single pushed across the Govs first run. The Govs would load the bases after Kole was walked, but a ground out stopped the threat.

Belmont (24-17) had no problem taking advantage of free bases, scoring three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Austin Peay starter Jake Brisbin issued two walks to start the third, both scoring on centerfielder Dylan Craig's double and a throwing error by Brisbin to home plate. The Bruins would load the bases after receiving two more walks and plated a third run on second baseman Daniel Wagner's sacrifice fly before the Govs were able to escape, trailing 3-0.

A leadoff walk in the fourth would come back to haunt the Govs as shortstop Packy Elkins lofted an RBI single to right field and Craig pushed across another run on a sacrifice fly. The Bruins lone run in the sixth was pushed across on right fielder Phillip Parsley's RBI fielder's choice, giving Belmont a 6-0 lead before the Govs broke through. Belmont manufactured a run in the seventh, as Brandon McCall singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball to set the final score.

Brisbin (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and six walks over 3.1 innings. Lucas led the Govs offense with a 2-for-5 outing, as APSU mustered just seven hits.

Frank Adelmen (1-0) earned the victory in his first collegiate start, holding the Govs scoreless on five hits in five innings. Craig finished the night 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Austin Peay returns home for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against Southeast Missouri. The set begins with a 1 p.m., Saturday, doubleheader followed by a 1 p.m., Sunday, contest.
