Govs fall to Redhawks in series finale

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? With its pitching staff depleted, Austin Peay State University's baseball team lost the finale of its Ohio Valley Conference series with Southeast Missouri, 13-3, Sunday afternoon, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (18-25, 4-9 OVC) did not make a decision about its starting pitcher until just prior to first pitch. Starter Jake Brisbin made the start and went 2.1 innings before making way for the Govs other midweek starter, Jeremy Dobbs, who went another 3.1 innings. Matt Kole, making his first appearance this season, followed that duo before Brian Bernatowicz closed the contest.

Southeast Missouri (25-16, 11-4 OVC) continued its hot hitting, rapping out 15 hits in the contest and scoring in each of the first six innings. The Redhawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Govs broke up the shutout. They led 11 runs in the first six frames before the Govs pitching staff could hold them scoreless.

Redhawks starter James Leigh (6-1) held the Govs in check, opening the game with three scoreless innings. Catcher Trey Lucas broke up the shutout bid in the fourth with a two-run home run. The Govs tacked on another run in the fifth courtesy an error, but Leigh settled back in and retired eight straight afterwards. He went eight innings and struck out eight hitters en route to the victory.

Right fielder Tyrell Cummings led SEMO with a 4-for-5, four RBI outing. Designated hitter Louie Haseltine had three hits and five RBI ? hitting an RBI double, solo home run and three-run double.

Brisbin (0-3) was tagged for the loss after allowing four runs on four hits over 2.1 innings. The Govs offense managed just five hits, with no player recording more than one hit.

Austin Peay begins a five-game road trip with a 6 p.m., Tuesday contest at Western Kentucky.
