Govs unable to snap road woes at Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team was unable to solve its road woes, dropping a 14-4 non-conference decision to Western Kentucky, Tuesday night at Nick Denes Field.

Austin Peay (18-26) scored in the first, plating two runs on first baseman Matt Kole's double down the right field line and adding a third on catcher Trey Lucas' RBI single. However, the Govs would be held scoreless until a sixth-inning RBI single by right fielder Daniel Baggett.

However, a depleted Govs pitching staff was unable to rein in a hot Western Kentucky (31-12) squad, surrendering runs in each of the first four innings as APSU fell behind, 12-3. A five-run third inning was punctuated by first baseman Jake Well's two-run home run and third baseman Wade Gaynor's three-run blast.

Lucas led the Govs six-hit outing with a 3-for-4 performance. Kole added a 2-for-4, two RBI outing. APSU starter Lucas Anderson suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over two innings. Zach Gerler ? usually a second baseman ? and Chuck Edlin each made their first appearance on the mound. Gerler surrendering one unearned run over 1.2 innings before making way for Edlin went the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run.

Three hitters had three-hit outings to lead the Hilltoppers 16-hit barrage, Wade finishing with three hits and four RBI.

Austin Peay continues its five-game road trip with a 6 p.m., Wednesday contest at Middle Tennessee.
