Box Score MOREHEAD, Ky. - Austin Peay State
University women's soccer team surrendered a penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute and
fell, 1-0, to Morehead State in Ohio Valley Conference action, Friday night, at
Jayne Stadium.
Morehead State (8-6-1, 5-0-1 OVC) remained
unbeaten in conference play courtesy a dominating offensive performance. The
Eagles harassed Lady Govs goalkeeper Carley Newman to the tune of 18 shots
(seven on goal), forcing her to make six saves.
"I thought our team played hard," Guth said. "Morehead
State had a number of quality opportunities. Carley had three game-changing
saves, but I thought we did a good job staying with them and battling. It's
unfortunate that we had a call go against us and lead to the penalty kick. It's
frustrating to see a game end that way."
Newman fended off a pair of excellent MSU
scoring chances, stopping a one-on-one play in the third minute and another
one-on-one opportunity in the 56th minute.
However, she was put in a corner in the 62nd
minute when Austin Peay's defense fouled Morehead State's Giuleana Lopez in the
box, setting up a penalty kick. Giuleana sent the ball into the left corner,
past Newman, for the game's lone tally.
Austin Peay (10-5-1, 2-3 OVC) had few
offensive opportunities in the match, finishing with just five shots (three on
goal). Freshman Emily Kink put all three of her shots on net to pace the
offensive effort.
"It was an emotional game," Guth said. "Now
the challenge is how do we respond. We have to leave it on the field and come
out on Sunday ready to play. I'm looking forward to see how our team responds,
coming back home and playing on Senior Day."
The Lady Govs return home to close out the
odd home-and-away weekend when they host Eastern Kentucky in a 2 p.m., Sunday
contest at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Admission is free to all fans.
