Tennis Govs outlasts Chattanooga, Friday

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay men's tennis team showed no signs of slowing after a near two week layoff in picking up a 4-3 win over Chattanooga, Friday, at the Governors Tennis Center.

With a young and still developing group of players, head coach Malik Tabet opted to stay with a lineup that fell one match shy of a season-opening win against Kennesaw State and it proved to be the right decision against a Chattanooga team that featured six freshmen.

Austin Peay picked up the doubles point, despite losing the No. 1 battle as freshmen Sean Bailey and Henrique Norbiato fell, 8-6. Sophomore Renan Bezerra and freshman Amar Subasic won a convincing match at No. 2, while Leonardo Locatelli and John Storie walked away with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, things started to heat up as the top two seeds each saw the Govs on the wrong end of a three-set match. Bailey and Locatelli each picked up second-set wins, but failed to take the match.

Norbiato and Bezerra both won in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 4, but Subasic lost at No. 5 to even the match score with only No. 6 singles left to play.

Storie won the first set in solid form, but allowed UTC's William Disterdick to win a tiebreaker in the second to force a deciding set. But with poise, Storie rolled to a 6-3 win to seal the match for the young Govs.

Austin Peay returns to the courts with a 4 p.m., Saturday, match against Alabama A&M.
