TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - Austin Peay State University's baseball team surrendered the notorious big inning and lost 6-5 to Indiana State, Tuesday night.
After jumping out to a 5-2 lead by the top of the fifth, Indiana State's opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth as the Sycamores pushed across four runs to take the deciding lead.
Seniors
Adam Browett and
Matt Kole each had two hits for the Govs, while freshman
Cody Hudson had a pair of RBI.
Austin Peay got on the board with three runs in the first inning. Sophomore
Jon Clinard and senior
Jared DeLong reached on back-to-back singles and Browett scored them both with a single to right and a two-base error by the right fielder. Hudson later plated Browett with a sacrifice fly to left.
Indiana state manufactured single runs in the second and fourth, both off Govs starter
Stephen Huff. Two singles and stolen bases scored Tyler Graham in the second, while hit-batsman followed by a pair of singles scored one in the fourth.
The Govs extended their early lead with two fifth-inning runs. Browett and Lucas each singled with one out. Hudson scored Browett with an RBI-ground out and Kole doubled down the left-field line to score Lucas.
The Sycamores took their lead after freshman
Matt Marsh loaded the bases to start the fifth. Kole, a left-hander, replaced him and was greeted with an RBI-single by Phil Liniger, followed by a two-RBI single by Robby Ort. After getting two fly outs, Kole was lifted for right-hander
Dylan Ray. Ben Ferrell quickly ripped another RBI-single, before Ray could induce a fly ball to end the inning.
Ray stayed on to pitch 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and walking one. Kole, who fell to 0-1, was tagged with the loss after permitting the deciding run in the fifth.
Nine different Sycamores pitched with Jacob Petricka (3-3) picking up the win and Tyler Browning (4) earning his season's first save.
Austin Peay returns to action when it plays host to Lipscomb in a 6 p.m., Wednesday, contest at Raymond C. Hand Park. Junior right-hander
Eric Davis is scheduled to make his season's first start.
