CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.. – Austin Peay women's tennis team won its fifth-straight match and improved to 3-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 6-1 win against Southeast Missouri, Tuesday, at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.
With some warm weather and a cool breeze blowing, the Lady Govs were swift in handing Southeast Missouri (2-10, 1-5 OVC) its fifth conference loss. Austin Peay (10-3, 3-1 OVC) swept the doubles point – for only the third time this season – en route to their season's 10th win. It marked the first time this decade the Lady Govs have reached double-digit wins.
Sophomore Vanja Tomic – who team with senior Mariana Pagan at No. 1 doubles – earned her season's ninth win after Nikole Novikova retired with an injury. Freshman Carolin Weikard won at No. 2 doubles alongside senior Yuki Nakamura and picked up fifth consecutive win at No. 2 singles.
Pagan, who battled an illness against UT Martin, last week, rebounded for a straight-set win at No. 3 singles. She is 10-1 on the season at No. 3. Fellow senior Michelle Liew also won in straight sets at No. 4 singles, while sophomore Demi Georgakopoulos improved to 4-3 at No. 5 with a win. The Lady Govs only loss came at No. 6 singles when Sarah Pettigrew defeated Brittany Hays in a super-tiebreaker.
Austin Peay is amidst a five-match home stand, with an upcoming, Friday, match against Eastern Kentucky.
