JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Austin Peay women's tennis team saw its three-match win streak come to an end with a 4-3, Ohio Valley Conference, loss at Jacksonville State, Saturday.
It was a marathon match, lasting more than five hours, with four singles matches going three sets. Unfortunatley for Austin Peay, the Lady Govs struggled out of the gate and ended up falling one match short.
"We came out without good focus," said head coach Malik Tabet. "I was proud of the way we battled on the singles side, but we have to be more conistent at Nos. 4, 5 and 6. Last year, those players played at 2, 3, and 4 and I need them to play that way now."
Mariana Pagan and
Vanja Tomic lost just their season's thirddoubles match, falling 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.
Michelle Liew and
Carolin Weikard took an 8-5 win, at No. 2 doubles - the lone Austin Peay doubles win.
Tomic won in straight sets over Viviane Marani at No. 1 singles and Weikard closed out a three-set match despite dropping the middle set at No. 2 singles. Pagan won at No. 3 singles, also in three sets. Liew won the opening set, 6-1, at No. 4, but dropped straight sets to lose the match.
Demi Georgakopoulos also won the first set, but lost the match at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Govs return to action with a 2 p.m., Wednesday, match at South Alabama.
