Lady Govs tennis downs EKU for sixth straight win

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.. – Austin Peay women's tennis continued its strong play, dispatching Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky, 5-2, Friday, in the first of two weekend league matches. The Lady Govs host Morehead State in a 2:30 p.m., Saturday, match at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts.

The Lady Govs (11-3; 4-1 OVC) used a potent doubles attack and consistent singles play to upend the Colonels. After opening OVC play 5-0, Eastern Kentucky (10-13; 5-2 OVC) now has lost two straight. Austin Peay has won six straight matches.

Austin Peay's No. 1 doubles team of senior Mariana Pagan and sophomore Vanja Tomic picked up an 8-4 win, as did No. 3 tandem of senior Michelle Liew and Demi Georgakopoulos. Senior Yuki Nakamura and freshman Carolin Weikard won a hard-fought match, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles to complete the sweep.

That momentum carried over into singles play where Austin Peay won the top four matches, but lost at Nos. 5 and 6. Tomic won in a straight-set shutout at No. 1, while Weikard and Pagan also brought home straight-set wins, at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Liew, meanwhile, dropped the second set, but hung on to win in three.

Tomic improved to 11-2 at No.1 singles, while Pagan moved to 11-1 at No. 3. Liew also reached double-digit wins for the second-straight year with a 10-4 record at No. 4.
