JACKSON
- Designated hitter Matt Kole had five hits and five RBI to lead Austin Peay
State University's baseball team to a 14-7 victory against Memphis, Tuesday
night, at Pringles Park.
Austin
Peay (16-12) rapped out a season-high 19 hits, two days after a season-best
17-hit performance at Eastern Illinois. The Govs posted three consecutive
three-run innings - the third, fourth and fifth innings - to jump out to a 9-2
lead before adding four runs in the sixth and a final run in the seventh.
Kole, who was 5-for-5 at the plate, began his
outing with doubles in the first and third innings, added a two-run home run in
the fourth, an RBI single in the fifth before capping the night with a two-run
double in the sixth. It was the first five-hit outing by a Govs hitter since
Tyler Farrar's five-hit outing against Morehead State in the 2008 season.
Second
baseman Jon Clinard and outfielder Adam Browett each added three hits.
Memphis
(13-16) was unable to overcome a seven-error defensive outing which led to four
unearned runs. Shortstop Chad Zurcher led the Tigers with two doubles as part
of a 3-for-5, two RBI outing.
Govs
starter Eric Davis (2-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst while
holding Memphis to three runs on seven hits over his seven innings of work.
Memphis
starter Dan Langfield (4-3) shouldered the loss after allowing six runs (four
earned) on nine hits over 3.1 innings.
Austin
Peay continues its eight-game road trip with a 6 p.m., Wednesday contest at
Middle Tennessee..
