Govs split doubleheader at Evansville

EVANSVILLE - Austin Peay State University's baseball team split a doubleheader with Evansville - falling in game one 11-7 before recovering to win game two 13-2 - in non-conference action, Tuesday, at Braun Stadium.

Austin Peay (23-23) led 7-5 after two innings in the opener before Evansville scored the game's final six runs to score the victory. The Govs ended their eight-game road losing streak in the nightcap jumping out to a 5-1 lead and holding on behind junior Eric Davis' pitching performance.

In the opener, Austin Peay sent 16 men to the plate in the first two innings en route to seven runs. Center fielder Jared DeLong had hits in both innings while first baseman John Hogan and third baseman Chris Lewellyn each had an RBI in both innings.

Evansville (27-22) kept close with five runs in those first two frames but took the lead with a four-run third inning and did not look back. Center fielder Greg Wallace's RBI groundout gave the Purple Aces the lead and third baseman Cody Fick added an RBI single to close the scoring in the fourth. Fick and shortstop Eric Stamets each added solo home runs in the fifth to insure the win.

On the mound, senior Matt Kole (0-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs in 2.2 innings of relief. Evansville's Seth McCabe (4-1) picked up the win after holding Austin Peay scoreless over the final five innings.

In the night cap, APSU starter Eric Davis (3-1) held Evansville to two runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings. Relievers David Vicini and Zach Gerler wrapped up the effort with a scoreless inning each.

The Govs offense reached double-digit scoring territory for the first time in eight games, scoring four runs in the first inning, adding a run in the second before running away courtesy a five-run fourth and capping the effort with three runs in the seventh.

DeLong had three RBI in the second game, with a sacrifice fly in the second, RBI double in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the seventh. He finished the day 4-of-9 with four RBI. Senior Matt Kole was 3-for-5 in the nightcap and also finished the day 4-for-9.

Evansville starter Kyle Lloyd (2-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in one inning. Stamets had the Purple Aces lone RBI, finishing 1-for-2 with a run-scoring groundout in the fifth.

Austin Peay continues its nine-game road trip with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Southeast Missouri, beginning with a 1 p.m., Saturday doubleheader.
