Box Score LEXINGTON, Va.- Sophomore
Jocelyn Murdoch and
freshman
Emily Kink each scored twice as Austin Peay State University women's
soccer team won its season-opener, 6-0, at Virginia Military Institute, Friday
afternoon.
It marked the first season-opening win since
the 2003 season, and was a solid follow up to the 8-0 exhibition win against
Freed-Hardeman, last week. The Lady Govs marked improvement in team speed and
stamina turned a scoreless halftime tie into six second-half goals.
Kink opened the scoring only three minutes
after the break with a 25-yard shot and Murdoch followed with her first goal on
a similar attack from the opposite side. Kink knocked in a one-timer in the 59th
minute off a feed from freshman Joceline Quiceno to make it 3-0.
"A second-half burst is good," Guth said. "If
you come out slow in the first half, you don't want to have to play from
behind. We made some adjustments at halftime and picked up the intensity in the
second half. We changed gears and made that a priority. It was then that we
started attacking them in the open field."
Credit the Lady Govs with reacting to that
sense of urgency, something that could be related to the added depth provided
from a number of newcomers seeing significant playing time. Last season, the
Lady Govs struggled late in games due to having a limited number of available
players.
Sophomore Laurena Robinson scored on an
assist by Kink in the 73rd minute and Joceline Quiceno found her
second goal on a 10-yard quick hitter to beat the keeper. Freshman Andy Quiceno
led Murdoch to her second goal in the 89th minute to set the final
6-0 margin.
"It was exciting to see a number of different
players score," Guth said. "Emily and Jocelyn had standout games, but we also had
strong performances from (senior) Samantha Northrup and Joceline Quiceno in the
midfield. (Senior) Hannah Jones and (junior) Sara Kluttz did a great job
anchoring the defense."
The Lady Govs outshot VMI 21-8, with no
Keydet shots on goal. Eleven different players managed a shot for the Lady
Govs, while Kink and Murdoch each had four shots on goal to lead the charge.
Austin Peay returns to action with its home
opener, a 7 p.m., Monday, game against Lipscomb at Morgan Brothers Soccer
Field.
