Box Score JONESBORO -Left
fielder Rolando Gautier had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games
as Austin Peay's baseball team posted its season's first road victory, 9-2, against
Arkansas State, Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 entering the fourth, Austin Peay (8-6) got some
assistance from the Arkansas State defense which committed back-to-back two-out
errors to jump start a four-run offensive outburst. The first error loaded the
bases with two outs and third baseman Greg Bachman rapped a ball to the ASU
shortstop who mishandled the ball, allowing two runs to score. Catcher P.J. Torres made the Red Wolves pay further with a two-run single, pushing the Govs
lead to 4-1.
Three innings later, the Govs scored five runs without any
Red Wolves help. Right fielder Jon Clinard walked to start the inning and moved
to second on shortstop Reed Harper's sacrifice bunt. Second baseman Jordan Hankins brought Clinard home with a single, extending the lead to 5-2.
However, Austin Peay wasn't done as first baseman John Hogan
and left fielder Rolando Gautier followed with back-to-back singles, Gautier's
scoring a run. Designated hitter Cody Hudson brought home another run with a
ground out. Bachman followed and punctuated the outing with a two-run home run,
capping the game's scoring.
Austin Peay starter Jeremy Dobbs (3-0) benefited from the
offensive outburst, limiting Arkansas State to two runs on five hits over seven
innings while striking out six.
Gautier had three singles as part of a 3-for-5 outing that
led the Govs 13-hit effort. Harper and Bachman each had two hits, Bachman
finishing with two RBI.
Arkansas State starter Brad Allen suffered the loss after
allowing the four unearned runs on six hits in four innings.
Red Wolves right fielder Ryan Emery went 2-for-4 with a first-inning
RBI single that was the game's first run. Shortstop Zach Maggio batted in ASU's
other run with a sacrifice fly and finished 1-for-1.
Austin Peay returns home for a key contest when it hosts
Tennessee in a 6 p.m., Wednesday contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
