BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University first
baseman John Hogan and closer Ryne Harper were named adidas Co-Player and
Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the Ohio Valley Conference, the league
office announced Monday.
Hogan, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., had four multi-hit
outings last weekend, including a pair of game-winning hits as the Govs' posted
a 4-0 mark. He opened the week with a game-winning, ninth-inning two-run single
- and finished 2-for-5 with two RBI - in the Govs 7-5 victory at Belmont,
Tuesday.
In the Govs weekend series at Morehead State, Hogan had seven
hits and eight RBI. He was 2-for-5 with two RBI in the Govs 7-3 series-opening
victory - his two-run home run in the fourth inning providing the game-winning
tallies. In the day's second game, Hogan was 2-for-5 at the plate but his lone
RBI - on a sixth-inning double - closed the Govs to within one run as they came
back from a nine-run deficit to win 12-10 in nine innings.
Hogan wrapped up his weekend with a 3-for-6, five-RBI outing
in a 24-5 rout of Morehead State, Sunday. He opened the day with a three-run
home run in the first and added a two-run double in the sixth.
Harper, a senior from Clarksville, had two wins and a save
in his three relief appearances during the week. He picked up the victory at
Belmont, Tuesday, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings - striking out two - after
Hogan's two-run single in the ninth gave the Govs the lead for good.
Harper opened his stay in Morehead State by recording his season's
fifth save in the series opener. He entered the game with two runners on base and
two outs. Harper did not allow an inherited runner to score as he struck out
the second batter he faced, ending the game. He returned to the mound in game
two and went 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out four, to pick up the victory.
Hogan shared the adidas OVC Player of the Week award with
Eastern Kentucky's Bryan Soloman who batted .529 with two home runs and six
RBI. Harper shared the adidas Pitcher of the Week honor with Jacksonville State's
Hunter Rivers, who threw a complete-game (seven-inning) two-hit shutout against
SIU Edwardsville.
Hogan and Harper become the third and fourth Governors
players to receive adidas OVC weekly honors. Freshman second baseman Jordan Hankins and junior pitcher Zach Toney swept the league's first 2011 weekly
honors.
Austin Peay has the upcoming week off for finals before
returning to action with a key OVC series against fourth-place Tennessee Tech,
Saturday-Sunday. The series will begin with a 1 p.m., Saturday doubleheader at
Raymond C. Hand Park.
