Box Score 2 MARTIN - Austin Peay secured its seventh consecutive Ohio
Valley Conference series victory, winning both ends of a doubleheader - 11-6
and 14-3 - from UT Martin, Friday, at Skyhawk Field.
Austin Peay (30-21, 17-5 OVC) needed a pair of three-run
home runs to secure the series-opening victory. Trailing 6-5 after seven innings, the Govs took advantage of
a Skyhawks error to extend the inning and shortstop Reed Harper made them pay
with a three-run home run that extended his hit streak to 28 games and gave
APSU a 8-6 lead. One inning later it was third baseman Greg Bachman who did the
damage with a three-run home run of his own to close out the game's scoring.
UT Martin (18-33, 9-12) nearly saw the game get away with
five errors leading to five Austin Peay runs. But the Skyhawks struck for three
runs in the sixth as the Govs had to use four different pitchers to record
three outs in the frame. The Skyhawks took their first lead, 6-5, on left fielder Trey Karlen's two-run home run
- his second of the game, but could not hold the advantage.
Govs reliever Mike Hebert (2-1) picked up the victory after
allowing the two-run home run in the eighth as part of a 1.2-inning outing.
Closer Ryne Harper notched his season's seventh save, recording the game's
final five outs. Starter Jeremy Dobbs allowed one unearned run over the first
five innings but left without a decision for the third consecutive start.
UTM reliever Alex Boshers (4-3) was tagged for the loss
after allowing five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.
The nightcap was not nearly as close as Austin Peay scored
three runs in the first but broke the game open with a eight-run fourth inning.
The Govs scored all eight of its runs in that frame with two outs as six consecutive
batters recorded a hit - including Reed Harper who extended his hit streak to
29 games with a RBI single.
Govs starter Jack Snodgrass (3-6) made the most of the rare
offensive support, allowing two runs over six innings for the win.
UT Martin starter Danny Kelley was tagged for the loss after
only recording two outs and facing eight batters, surrendering three runs.
Reed Harper led the Govs offense with two hits and six RBI,
with a three-run home run, two sacrifice flies and the RBI single. Hogan and
Bachman each had five hits and five RBI. The Govs finished the doubleheader
with 29 hits and received 16 walks from UTM pitchers.
Karlen led UTM with three hits and four RBI as the Skyhawks
posted just 19 hits on the day.
Austin Peay and UT Martin close out their regular-season
slates with a 1 p.m., Saturday contest at Skyhawk Field.
