LOUISVILLE,
Ky. - A scorecard disqualification dropped Austin Peay State University men's
golf team to a ninth-place finish, Tuesday, at the 36-hole Cardinal Collegiate,
hosted by Louisville at the Cardinal Club.
Sophomore
Anthony Bradley signed an incorrect card following Monday's round, which led to
his round being disqualified. Without his opening round score the Govs shot a
593, but still ended up six shots ahead of the next Ohio Valley Conference
school - Eastern Kentucky in 12th with a 599.
Austin
Peay overcame the DQ to shoot the tournament's second-lowest round, Tuesday,
bringing home a 290. Junior Dustin Korte fired a two-under par 70, while
sophomores Trey Tarpley and Bradley each shot 73 and sophomore Marco Iten was
the fourth counter with a 74.
"Dustin
played well and had a good day," head coach Kirk Kayden said. "It was a tough
day, the wind was blowing tough and the guys played well. Anthony responded
well after the scorecard issue."
Korte
led the Govs with a 15th-place finish (75-70=145) followed by
Tarpley (73-73=146) who was t-20th. Their low scores can be
attributed to playing consistent golf. For the tournament, Korte was
three-under par on the par-5s and played the par-4s even. Tarpley, meanwhile,
had 28 pars in 36 holes.
Despite
playing the par-5s at three under, Iten (76-74=150) finished t-37th.
Senior Drew Miller (79-79=158) continued his recent struggles, finishing t-78th.
Arkansas-Little
Rock was the team champion with a two-round 573, followed by Northern Illinois
at 581 and Wisconsin at 582. Host Louisville and DePaul finished t-4th
at 582.
"We
played hard and we were close to having a really good week," Kayden said. "Both
rounds, I felt like we had an opportunity to shoot under par, but we have to
close it out. I'm encouraged by the way they're playing. We have chance to be
really good if we can keep our focus and finish out tournaments.
"We're
still undefeated against the OVC, so that's a good sign. We just have to
continue to get better down the stretch."
