CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University made it two straight wins, Saturday night, when it outlasted Jacksonville State, 60-57, in Ohio Valley Conference basketball action played in Dave Aaron Arena.

The victory improved the Govs to 2-3 in the OVC and 5-13 overall. Jacksonville State falls to 1-6 in the OVC and 6-14 overall.

In a slow-paced game the Govs, who meticulously built a 10-point lead with 5:01 left, found themselves holding on in the game's closing minute. Twice trying to milk the clock in the closing 3:00 the Govs were victims of shot-clock violations and both times Jacksonville State took advantage of them.

As a result, with 45 seconds left, Jacksonville State found itself down by two points, 56-54 after a Nick Cook jumper. But point guard Jerome Clyburn answered with a right-of-the lane to make it a four-point game with 22 left.

Again Jacksonville State would not go away. Brian Williams, who had 35 points over the previous two games, made a three to make it a one-point game with 14 seconds left-Williams finished with just seven points.

On the ensuing inbounds play, the Governors broke JSU's pressure and Clyburn found himself heading free to the basketball before Williams caught him from behind and fouled him. Clyburn made both free throws with eight seconds left, giving JSU the ball with a chance to tie.

But with Josh Terry and Melvin Baker double-teaming Williams on the final possession, the sophomore guard's off-balance three-point shot missed wide left and Austin Peay grabbed the rebound along with the victory.

Baker led the Govs with 12 points while Terry added 10 as Austin Peay's only double-figure scorers. Despite foul trouble, John Fraley ended with a game-high nine rebounds as APSU held a 33-29 rebound advantage.

Tarvin Gaines, who was held scoreless the previous three games, came off the bench to lead JSU with 13 points while Ronnie Boggs added 12.

The Govs' three-games-in-five-day weekend homestand concludes Monday when they play host to Tennessee State in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
