Govs offense held quiet by Purple Aces

Box Score

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A night after its pitching staff stymied an opponent, Austin Peay State University saw that treatment returned in a 12-1 loss to Evansville, Wednesday night at Braun Stadium.

Austin Peay (29-19) was held to a season-low tying three hits by four Evansville pitchers. Second baseman Jordan Hankins plated the Govs lone run with his third inning solo home run. Catcher Matt Wollenzin and shortstop Reed Harper each had singles in the second and sixth innings, respectively.

Evansville (28-21) was held scoreless in the first inning. However, left fielder Jason Hockemeyer's leadoff home run in the second began a barrage that saw the Purple Aces score in each of their seven remaining innings.

Shortstop Eric Stamets led Evansville's 18-hit attack with a 4-for-6 performance. Hockemeyer went 3-for-6 with a team-best three RBI. All nine Evansville starters recorded an RBI with eight batters recording a hit.

Austin Peay starter Lucas Anderson (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over three innings. Governors pitchers handed out nine walks, hit two batters and were charged with four wild pitches in addition to the 18 hits allowed.

Evansville's Ryan Billo (8-1) picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits while striking out five Govs over six innings.

Austin Peay returns to action when it hosts Morehead State in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, beginning with a 6 p.m., Friday contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
