Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - For the second straight game Austin
Peay State University's baseball team relied on a simple formula - score in
bunches and get a solid pitching outing to back it up - to post a 6-2 Ohio
Valley Conference victory against SIU Edwardsville, Saturday, at Simmons
Baseball Complex.
Austin Peay (28-17, 14-5 OVC) scored five unanswered runs in
the second and third innings. Third baseman Greg Bachman and second baseman
Jordan Hankins each had two-run home runs, in the second and third innings
respectively, to boost the Govs offense.
The Govs defense had an up and down outing with a few outstanding
plays helping to out-balance a trio of miscues. However, it was a fourth inning
triple play that will stand out in the contest.
Govs starter Ryan Quick got into trouble after allowing a
leadoff single and saw the following batter reach on an infield error. However,
the defense nullified the miscue when SIUE right fielder Devin Caldwell chopped
the ball to Bachman who stepped on third to start the play. He then threw to
Hankins for the out at second then a relay throw to first baseman Tyler Childress to complete the triple play - the first in Austin Peay's recorded
history.
Quick (5-2) showed a return to his early season form
allowing only two sixth-inning runs in a seven-inning outing that saw him
scatter six hits. Closer Tyler Rogers recorded the final five outs to record
his season's ninth save.
Shortstop Reed Harper, catcher Matt Wollenzin, left fielder
Cody Hudson and Hankins each had two hits to lead a 12-hit outing for the Govs.
SIUE starter Travis Felax suffered the loss after allowing
five runs on 11 hits over 6.1 innings, despite striking out seven Austin Peay
hitters. Caldwell, despite hitting into the triple play, led the Cougars offense
with a 1-for-4, two RBI performance.
Austin Peay and SIU Edwardsville will close out their
three-game OVC series with a 1 p.m., Sunday contest.
