Lady Govs win at Eastern Illinois for first time since 2007

CHARLESTON, Ill. – For the first time since 2007, Austin Peay State University women's basketball team picked up a victory at Lantz Arena, posting a 64-56 Ohio Valley Conference victory against Eastern Illinois, Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Austin Peay (5-13, 2-3 OVC) ended a six-game losing streak on Eastern Illinois' home court. The Lady Govs also won back-to-back road games for the first time since Feb. 19, 2011 – ending a streak of 37 true road games without consecutive victories.

Eastern Illinois (7-10, 2-4 OVC) controlled the opening three minutes. The Panthers scored the game's first four points and held a 6-2 advantage at the 17:12 mark.

The Lady Govs responded with a 16-2 run over the next five minutes. Freshman Tearra Banks' layup gave Austin Peay its first lead, 7-6, at the 15:44 mark. Junior Kristen Stainback and sophomore Tiasha Gray each added a three-pointer during the run. Banks capped the run with another layup to give APSU an 18-9 lead with 12:48 left in the first half.

Austin Peay built its lead to 10 points on a Tearra Banks layup with three minutes left. The Lady Govs would take an 11-point lead into halftime courtesy a 4-0 run in the final minute.

The Lady Govs scored the second half's first six points, pushing the lead to 17 points, 40-23, just 2:30 into the half. Austin Peay would maintain its double-digit lead until the game's final 3:30. The Lady Govs struggled to hit free-throws in the final three minutes, making just 6-of-14, but Eastern Illinois could only outscore APSU 9-6 in the closing minutes.

Gray came off the bench for a second consecutive game and for a second straight game led APSU in scoring with 15 points. Stainback and freshman Beth Rates each added 12 points. Sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha chipped in 11 points.

Jordyne Crunk led Eastern Illinois with 15 points. Katlyn Payne added 12 points and Erica Brown chipped in 11 points.

Austin Peay concludes its four-game road trip with a 7 p.m., Monday contest at SIU Edwardsville.
