Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Austin Peay State University's baseball team saw its season come to an end with a 4-3 Ohio Valley Conference loss to SIUE, Saturday, at Simmons Baseball Complex.
Austin Peay (23-32, 14-16 OVC) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to build a 3-1 lead. The Govs utilized the bunting game to score its first two runs. Catcher P.J. Torres' squeeze bunt in the second led to a run when second baseman Alex Robles scored. Robles then put down a squeeze bunt in the third inning to score shortstop Garrett Copeland.
SIUE (21-31, 16-14 OVC) scored a run in the first inning but did not score again until the sixth inning. The Cougars saw the first two batters in the frame reach base safely, including shortstop Skyler Geissinger's RBI double that saw him end the play on third after a throwing error. Geissinger would score, tying the game, on designated hitter Keaton Wright's single.
The Cougars would break the tie in the seventh with a trio of singles. Center fielder Denton Reed began the rally with a one-out single and ultimately scored the go-ahead run on Caldwell's single.
Austin Peay reliever Zach Walton (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh. Starting pitcher Caleb Powell allowed a run in the first but settled in to go four innings, striking out four.
SIUE reliever Caleb Wilkerson (2-1) tossed the final 6.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four.
Outfielder Ridge Smith had two hits to lead Austin Peay, which recorded six hits in the contest.
Reed and Caldwell each had two hits to pace the Cougars offense which had nine hits on the day.
