CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's soccer opened up its preseason schedule with a 3-1 victory over Indiana State, Tuesday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
After adjusting to one another as a unit throughout much of the first half, the Lady Govs began to find their rhythm on attacks. In the 19th minute, sophomore Kirstin Robertson took one of seven APSU first half shots, connecting on a cross by fellow sophomore Caroline Wistrom, to get an early goal.
The Sycamores, who out-shot Austin Peay 10-7 in the first half, answered back in the 33th minute. A corner by Katie Wells was sent into the box, where Sydney Loesing got a head to it and put it past the keeper.
In the second half, Austin Peay would make the most of a corner opportunity with newcomer Nicole Wojcik sending in a cross to crowd the keeper. On the other end, senior Shelby Olszewski got a foot to it off a deflection to stamp the eventual game-winner.
As both teams battled for possession in the closing stages, the Lady Govs pressed forward following a takeaway. In the 85th minute, Robertson would once again get involved up front, and maintained control of the ball to find freshman McKenzie Dixon for the goal in her preseason debut.
Robertson and junior Gina Fabbro each had two shots to lead the team. For Indiana State, Sydney Lovelace attempted a team-high three shots.
Sophomore Lindsey Todd played all 90 minutes in goal for Austin Peay, allowing just the one goal with four saves.
The Lady Govs will close out the preseason on Saturday with a home exhibition contest against Evansville. Kickoff from Morgan Brothers Soccer Field will begin at 7 p.m.
