Carger’s 14-kill outing not enough as Govs fall at Murray State

Box Score

MURRAY, Ky. – Logan Carger posted a 14-kill performance but Austin Peay State University's volleyball team could not overcome a lackluster offensive outing in a four-set (14-25, 15-25, 25-14, 11-25) loss to Murray State, Tuesday night at Racer Arena.

Austin Peay (22-4, 11-2 OVC) saw its middle block duo of Carger and Kaylee Taff each post impressive outings. Carger's 14-kill effort came with a .355 attack percentage and she had four blocks. Taff supplied eight kills at a .273 attack percentage and also with four blocks.

However, the Govs were held to a season-low .068 attack percentage and saw the offense held to a negative attack rate in three of the four sets. Austin Peay showed signs of life in an 18-kill effort that won it the third frame, but it could not keep the momentum going in the fourth.

Murray State (16-9, 10-3 OVC) won its third straight OVC outing thanks to its defense that posted 10 blocks and 74 digs. Katirah Johnson finished with six blocks to pace the defensive effort while Becca Fernandez chipped in 29 digs.

The Racer offense again received big outings from its top two hitters as Rachel Giustino and Dacia Brown each finished with 14 kills. Three other Racers hitters supplied five kills each.

With the loss, Austin Peay saw its OVC lead reduced to one match with three conference outings remaining in 2018. The Governors will return to the Bluegrass State in four days for a 1 p.m. (CT), Saturday contest at Eastern Kentucky.
