Govs look to remain unbeaten with home test

CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's soccer team looks to continue its unbeaten start to the season as they face off against Alabama A&M at home, 5 p.m., Friday.

The Govs made a perfect start under first-year head coach Naomi Kolarova, defeating Middle Tennessee 1-0 off a Jennifer Smith volley that was selected as number two in NCAA Soccer's Top 5 Plays of the Week.

The Govs also defeated Evansville on the road, 2-0, earning their second consecutive shutout and their first road shutout since Sept. 22, 2016 against Morehead State. Austin Peay also shutout their opponents in back-to-back games for the first time since defeating Mississippi Valley State (3-0, Sept. 8, 2017) and Little Rock (3-0, Sept. 10, 2017).

Austin Peay also picked up two Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week awards, with Smith earning the Defensive Player of the Week and Mary Parker Powell nabbing the Goalkeeper of the Week award. The award is Powell's second OVC Goalkeeper of the Week award in her career.

Opponent Spotlight

Alabama A&M has had a rough start to its season, losing both of its opening two matches to Chattanooga (3-0) and North Alabama (2-1). The Govs are 6-2 all-time against the Bulldogs, including winning the last four matches of the series. The last meeting between the schools was 2016, a 2-0 win for the Govs. Smith scored a goal in that match and was assisted by defender Melody Fisher.

The match, like home matches, is free to attend and there are bleachers for seating. However, spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs as bleacher seating is limited.

The Govs have a week off after the match before hitting the road to take on Little Rock, Aug. 31 and Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State, Sept. 2.
