Govs geared up for a decisive OVC weekend

CLARKSVILLE – With the regular season winding down, Austin Peay State University soccer will take on a pair of Ohio Valley Conference foes from Kentucky, first hosting Morehead State 5 p.m., Friday, at Morgan Bros Soccer Field before traveling to Murray State 1 p.m., Sunday, for a First Financial Bank Battle of the Border.

Friday is "Pedal to the Peay" night; and anyone who rides their bike to the match at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field will get a free t-shirt.

In last season's trip to Morehead, Kentucky, the Governors defense only allowed two shots on goal in the 1-0 loss. Mary Parker Powell made one save, but the Governors were never able to get it going on the offensive end.

Last season, Murray State made the trip to Clarksville, where they jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead. Peyton Powell made six second half saves and Caroline Wistrom scored in the 48th minute, but the Govs couldn't find an equalizer in a 2-1.

With only two weekends remaining in the regular season, the Governors sit in the second to last spot for the OVC Soccer Championship. With seven points in conference play, the Govs are tied with Eastern Illinois and Morehead State, and trail Belmont by three points. The Govs will control their own fate in the OVC race, as three of their next four games are against Morehead State, Eastern Illinois, and Belmont.

Morehead State enters Friday's match 4-10-1, 2-4-1 in the OVC, and on a four game losing streak. Murray State enters the weekend 8-5, 5-1 in the OVC) and will travel to Jacksonville State on Friday night before the Governors come calling.

After a brace against Jacksonville State, Rachel Bradberry is the Governors new leading goal scorer. The sophomore from Alabama has three goals on the season, surpassing Claire Larose, who still leads the Govs with seven points. Larose currently ranks in the top ten in the OVC in shots (13), shots per game (2.38), assists (3), and game-winning goals (2).
