Govs leave Natural State with a pair of wins

CONWAY, Ark. – After dropping the regular season opener, Austin Peay State Univesity women's tennis got back on track with a pair of wins in the Natural State, beating Central Arkansas, 4-3, on Friday, before turning around and dispatching Southern Arkansas, 7-0, Saturday.

The Governors got off to a slow start on Friday against the Sugar Bears; dropping two-of-three doubles matches to lose the doubles point. Fabienne Schmidt and Aleks Topalovic were the only Govs duo to win, as the pair picked up their first win together.

In singles action, the Govs came out and took care of business, with freshman Jana Leder picking up her season's second singles win and the first point of the match for Austin Peay. Another freshman picked up the Governors second point of the match in the No. 6 matchup, as Sarah Heckel claimed her first singles win of the spring.

With the Govs leading 2-1, Central Arkansas was able to get tie the match, knocking off Danielle Morris on the No. 2 line. However, the match did not stay tied for long, as Fabienne Schmidt won the No. 1 matchup for the Governors to retake the lead.

With a 3-2 lead in the match, the Governors did not waste any time closing out the match, as Martina Paladini Jennings won on the No. 4 line to give the Governors a 4-2 lead and put the match on ice. Topalovic fell in the No. 5 singles match, but it would not matter as the Govs picked up their first win of the season on the road at Central Arkansas.

After picking up their season's first win against the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas, the Governors got right back in action Saturday against the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas.

The Governors jumped out to an early lead, claiming the first two doubles matches, and leading in the third. Morris and Leder picked up their first win as duo, playing as the Govs No. 1 doubles pairing. Heckel and Ana Albertson followed suit, picking up their first win as a duo and clinching the doubles point for the Governors. In the third doubles match, Schmidt and Topalovic were outfront, 5-2, but the match was left unfinished, as the Govs had already claimed the doubles point.

In singles play, the Governors went undefeated, claiming all six points en route to a 7-0 sweep in the match. Leder and Schmidt both improved to 3-0 in singles play this spring, picking up their season's third win against the Muleriders. Morris and Paladini-Jennings both picked up their spring season's second singles victory.

In the final two singles matches of the day, Ana Albertson and Topalovic each picked up their first singles win of the spring season.
