Govs sweep Jaguars in non-conference finale

INDIANAPOLIS – Austin Peay State University women's tennis will enter the Ohio Valley Conference season on a high note, as the Governors wrapped up the non-conference slate with a 7-0 sweep of IUPUI, Thursday, at the West Indy Racquet Club.

Once again it was the Governors No.3 doubles pairing that led the way, as Ana Albertson and Sarah Heckel were the first match on the board, picking up their team-leading ninth win as a duo this spring. With the Govs needing just one more doubles win to claim the doubles point, Fabienne Schmidt and Martina Paladini-Jennings came through, posting a win in the No. 2 positon to clinch the doubles point. Schmidt and Paladini-Jennings improved to 3-0 this spring when they are paired together in doubles action.

In the No. 1 doubles match-up, Danielle Morris and Jana Leder were trailing, 5-3, but the match was left unfinished after the Governors won the doubles point.

In singles action, the No. 3 match was the first to go final, as Leder was winning in straight sets when her opponent withdrew from the match. Leder improved to 10-1 in singles play this spring and is the first Governor to record double-digit singles wins.

The No. 4 singles match was the next on the board, as Paladini-Jennings picked up her eighth win of the spring to put the Governors a point away from claiming the match. Heckel picked up the match-clinching point for the Govs, positing a win on the No. 5 line as the German freshman improved to 5-0 when playing in the No. 5 position this spring.

With the match already in hand, the Governors did not let up, as Schmidt posted another convincing win for Austin Peay in the No. 1 match-up. Then Morris gave the Governors a 6-0 advantage, winning the tightest match of the day in the No. 2 position.

Finally, the Governors lone senior capped off the sweep of IUPUI, as Albertson posted her fifth win of the spring in the No. 6 position. The Govs wrapped up the non-conference slate with a 9-3 record, that included six 7-0 sweeps.
