CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After clinching a home game in the upcoming ASUN Conference Championship, Saturday, the Austin Peay State University women's tennis team hosts Memphis in nonconference action at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the Governors Tennis Courts.
Austin Peay (15-5, 6-2 ASUN) earned its second-straight win in a 4-2 victory against Jacksonville State, Saturday, in Mountain Brook, Alabama. Despite dropping her first eight games against the Gamecocks, Asia Fontana clinched the win for the Govs following her three-set win in No. 6 singles.
Sophia Baranov leads Austin Peay with 17 singles wins this season and is one of two Governors with just one loss in ASUN play. The Almay, Kazakhstan native also is 12-1 from the No. 4 position this spring.
Melody Hefti is second on the team with 16 singles wins this season and has won 11 of her last 12 matches dating back to Feb. 23.
Hefti and Jana Leder have won a team-best 14 doubles matches this spring while exclusively playing the No. 1 position, while Denise Torrealba and Baranov are 9-3 from the No. 2 court.
Tuesday's match is the first between Austin Peay and Memphis (6-11, 3-0 American Athletic Conference).Â
After dropping nine of their first 10 matches to start the spring, the Tigers have won five of their last seven and enter Tuesday's contest against the Governors on a two-match winning streak after defeating Cincinnati and Xavier, Friday and Saturday.
Emily Meyer leads Memphis with eight singles wins while primarily playing the No. 4 position, while she and Aran Garcia Teixido lead the Tigers' doubles pairings with a 9-6 doubles record from the No. 1 court.
Following Tuesday's match against the Tigers, Austin Peay prepares for its first ASUN Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Saturday and Sunday. The Govs host Queens at 3 p.m., Saturday, and, if they defeat the Royals, host the winner of Liberty and Bellarmine at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Governors Tennis Courts. Â
