GOVS-COLONELSÂ POSTGAMEÂ QUOTES
Austin Peay head coach Jeff Faris
Opening statement… "I am proud of our guys' effort. We have to learn how to finish and that falls on me first and foremost. I think we played with great effort and, at times, played some of our best ball in all three phases. We have to find a way to win the fourth quarter and to start better in the third quarter."
On recent second halves…  "We have to find a way to be a better third-quarter team. I thought we had a good plan going into the third quarter, but we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and you can't do that. Whenever both penalties and negative plays happen, it doesn't matter what half it is in, you are not going to be a very good offense or play to your capability. For some reason, those things tend to happen in the third quarter for us, so we have to study ourselves to find what we can do to make sure we play the same in the second half as we did in the first."
On first-half defense… "They [the APSU defense] were unbelievable in the first half in the way they were able to play and limit their offense. Our guys really ran to the football, understood the gameplan, and executed it very, very well."
Austin Peay quarterback Austin Smith
On second-half struggles… "It comes down to execution. We could all do a better job executing and putting our guys in the best position. I could do a better job of getting the ball to my playmakers and taking what the defense gives me. We have to limit our negative plays which was a big thing in the second half."
On improving next week…. "We just have to put our guys in the right position. Knowing what they [Eastern Kentucky] does, they were built to stop the run. I tip my hat to Eastern Kentucky, they twisted and did a lot of things up front that messed with our offensive line and messed with some of the zones we ran. We just have to go back to the drawing board and find out what is our bread and butter and what is good against those types of things. We all have to put our heads together to come up with a good game plan. The offensive line has to feel comfortable with the game plan as well."
Austin Peay defensive lineman Davion Hood
On his performance… "It was opportunity meeting execution. I just went out there and did what I had to do. My coach always tells me that the plays will be there, just do your job. That is just what I tried to do and focus on today."
On playing nearly 40 minutes… "You really have to focus on your technique. When you get tired, you just have to go back to the tool shed. When you focus on your technique, it is going to help you a lot in your play and do what you have to do on the field."
