JONESBORO, Arkansas – A fantastic first day of the Lady Red Wolves Classic at Sage Meadows Country Club has Austin Peay State University women's golf team in prime position to close the fall with another top-tier finish.
The Govs enter Tuesday's final round holding a five-shot lead after a 36-hole 571 (288-283)—the second-best 36-hole showing in program history. Austin Peay leads Murray State (576) and host Arkansas State (578), with Central Arkansas (583) and Little Rock (584) lurking at a double-digit distance.
After carrying the lead for much of the second round, senior Jillian Breedlove sits one shot off the pace after a 141 (71-70) on Monday. She showed her mettle as the best big-ball hitter on the course over the first 36 holes, averaging a tournament-best 4.50 strokes on par-5 holes.
Tied with Breedlove heading into the final round is junior Abby Jimenez, whose second-round 68 was both the best of her career and tied for the sixth-best individual round in program history. She birdied Hole Nos. 2-5 during the second round, the of which was one just five birdies on the day at the 160-yard par-3. She also navigated the first two rounds with limited difficulty, shooting bogey or worse on just three holes.
Breedlove and Jimenez's matching 141s are tied for the 10th-best individual 36-hole results in program history.
Senior Abby Hirtzel looks to secure her first top-10 of the fall season with a good showing on Tuesday; she's currently tied for 12th after a 144 (73-71), which bested her previous career-low 36-hole score by three strokes. Sophomores Ella Arnzen (73-72—145) and Jordin Cowing (73-78—151) rounded out the lineup for the Govs, while sophomore Makenna Cox (81-73—154) competed as the individual. Cox's eagle on the 410-yard par-5 at No. 1 early in her second round was one of just seven eagles surrendered by the course on Monday.
Final-round action at Sage Meadows Country Club begins at 8 a.m., Tuesday; the Govs will be in the top pairing, alongside Murray State and Arkansas State, on Hole Nos. 1-3.
