EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Austin Peay State University's soccer team fell to SIUE 3-0, while sophomore keeper Megan Waskiewicz corralled a career-high eight saves in Thursday night's match at Korte Stadium.
By the Half
Austin Peay faced a challenging first half against SIUE, as the Cougars outshot the Govs 9-1, and put up a pair of goals for an early lead. Claire Nieroda opened the scoring with a goal in the 6th minute after putting a corner kick on the near post, which was deflected into the back of the net. Towards the end of the first half, the Cougars extended their advantage when Olivia Watt scored in the 40th minute, as Taylor Babb assisted the score. The Govs struggled to find offensive momentum, with sophomore Abby Mathews recording one of their few shots. The period ended with SIUE leading 2-0.
SIUE extended its lead early in the second half with a goal by Tori Bockstadter in the 58th minute. Carson Bohnenstiehl assisted the goal. The Governors' attempts to respond were thwarted by SIUE's goalkeeper, Sarah Bozeman, who made crucial saves against multiple shots, including efforts from redshirt junior Kayla Barr and senior Kerigan Kivisto. Waskiewicz also made several key stops, coming away with eight in the match - the most in a game this season. Despite APSU's offensive efforts, including a late corner kick and shots from sophomore Kylie Brandes and junior Kiley Reese, the match concluded with a 3-0 victory for the Cougars.
