Clarksville, Tenn.–Junior libero Ginny Gerig, of the Austin Peay State University volleyball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.
The Towanda, Illinois native recorded 56 digs last week, helping the Govs hold Murray State and Eastern Kentucky to a .195 attack percentage on the week. Her 26 digs in the four-set match in Murray were a season-high in four-set outings for Gerig, as was the subsequent 30 she posted in the five-setter against the Colonels. In addition, the outing at Eastern Kentucky was her first career 30-dig outing and the 13th best mark in program history, and also moved her to 11th on the Govs career digs list.
Monday, Gerig was named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, her second weekly honor from the conference this season and the 12th earned by an Austin Peay volleyball player in 2018.
The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.
Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:
- Junior kicker Logan Birchfield, of the football team, earned OVC Specialist of the Week honors after booting a pair of 40-plus yard field goals against Eastern Kentucky, Saturday—the first Gov to hit multiple 40-yarders in the same contest since John Bell (2008). His 45-yarder in the second quarter equaled his career long.
- Sophomore guard Dayton Gumm, of the men’s basketball team, became the first Gov since Derek Wright against Murray State (Jan. 31, 2008) with a points-assists double-double after posting 11 points and 10 assists against Oakland City in the 2018-19 season opener.
