Governors to face Valparaiso to wrap up South Padre event

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas ? Dave Loos and Homer Drew, a pair of St. Louis natives, have traveled some 2,800 miles between them to face each other for only the second time as Division I head basketball coaches.

They will do so in Saturday's 2:30 p.m. contest in the South Padre Island Invitational, at the South Padre Island Convention Center, as Loos' Austin Peay Governors will play Drew's Valparaiso Crusaders.

Valpo comes in with a 3-1 record after defeating Maryland-Eastern Shore, 66-55, Friday afternoon. Freshman center Ryan Bouchie came off the bench to score 23 points and grab nine rebounds while junior forward Urule Igbavboa added 15 points and nine rebounds. Guard Jarryd Loyd leads the team in scoring, however, at 13 ppg.

The Govs, meanwhile, broke open a tight game with a 8-0 late-game run to defeat Florida Gulf Coast, 67-57, also Friday afternoon. Drake Reed led the Govs with 21 points and eight rebounds while Kyle Duncan added 13 points and six rebounds.

Point guard Derek Wright sparked the Govs with six assists and five steals.
