Austin Peay women's basketball team closes out the season's first month when it hosts Southern Illinois in a 7 p.m., Wednesday, contest at the Dunn Center.
Wednesday's Lady Govs contest will be available on radio in West Tennessee and Western Kentucky on WVRY 105.1 FM, Austin Peay's radio partner. Fans outside the listening area can catch the action on APSU's official athletics Web site, APSUGovernors.com.
Austin Peay returns home after an encouraging trip to Southern Miss during the Thanksgiving Break. The Lady Govs picked up their season's first victory at the Lady Eagle Classic and put a scare into unbeaten Southern Miss in the championship game. Freshmen Alex Bivens and Ashley Herring were each named to the all-tournament team. Bivens had six three-point field goals in the two games and averaged 13 points. Herring averaged 16 points and nine rebounds in the tournament.
“I feel really good about how we played last weekend ? even though we split the two games,” said Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels. “I believe they got some confidence in picking up our first win of the season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. I felt the Southern Miss was a very good game in that we had learned from some of the mistakes we made in our first two games where we dug ourselves into a hole. Unfortunately, we dug that hole so deep against Southern Miss that our lack of depth at some positions was revealed.”
Through four games, Bivens leads the Lady Govs with 12.5 points per game and has 12 three-pointers to her credit. Herring ranks second in scoring (11.8 ppg) but leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game. Senior Ashlee McGee is averaging 5.0 assists per game.
Southern Illinois enters the midweek affair amidst a three-game losing streak, including losses to Western Kentucky and South Dakota State at the George Washington Classic during the Thanksgiving Weekend. Freshman Ellen Young led the Salukis with 35 points in the tournament's two games, earning all-tournament honors. On the season, junior Jasmine Gibson leads the Salukis with 13.8 points per game and junior Erica Smith is grabbing a team-best 6.2 rebounds per outing.
