CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Drake Reed scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Fernandez Lockett recorded a double-double to lead Austin Peay State University men's basketball to a 75-62 win against Lambuth, Monday night, in exhibition action in Dave Aaron Arena.
The Govs now will prepare to open the 2007-08 season for real at Vanderbilt, 7 p.m., Saturday in Memorial Gym.
Reed, the junior forward, scored 16 of his points in the first half as the Governors built as much as an 18-point lead. But Lambuth, a team that features former
Murray State star Trey Pearson, would not go away. In fact, the Eagles sliced the margin to eight, 39-31, at halftime.
In the second half, the Governors quickly regain their double-digit margin, building as much as a 60-41 advantage with 10:45 left in the game. From there, the visitors never got it below 14 until the closing seconds.
Lockett, who recorded 10 double-doubles a year ago as a junior, finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior point guard Derek Wright added 13 points while senior guard Todd Babington chipped in with 11.
The Governors out-rebounded Lambuth by a 46-36 margin and held the Eagles to just 31.1 percent (23 of 74) shooting. However, APSU kept the door cracked by committing an uncharacteristic 26 turnovers.
Pearson and Trey Weddle each had 13 points for Lambuth.
