Lady Govs blank Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-0

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team turned the corner on what was quickly becoming the worst start in program history with a 6-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Friday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. The Lady Govs improve to 1-4, while UAPB falls to 0-3.

“It's nice for us to be able to find the back of the net and build a little confidence,” Guth said. “We've had some tough battles with little productivity and nice to be able to play like we did tonight.”

Austin Peay fired 51 shots with 24 on goal while holding UAPB without an offensive attack. Five Lady Govs had more than five shots, senior Jessica Hosse leading the way with seven, including five on goal. Junior Ashley Beck had six shots.

Freshman Kellie Cannon scored the game's first goal in the 25th minute. Fellow freshman Monique Wong pulled the keeper out of net and dropped it off to Cannon for the score.

In the 40th minute, junior transfer Ashley Michels took a turnover after a blocked shot and fired it into the back of the net giving the Lady Govs a 2-0 lead at the break.

Five minutes after the half, Beck netted her season's second score. Senior Stephanie Hosse popped her second less than 15 minutes later ? assist to Beck ? making it 4-0.

In the 85th minute, a loose ball in the box set up freshman Samantha Northrop and she delivered, firing the ball just under the crossbar with power that demanded respect.  Northrop, one minute later, sailed a ball five feet out in front and Beck dropped a header to senior Jessica Hosse for the game's final score.

The Lady Govs return to action with a 1 p.m., Sunday, match against UNC-Asheville at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
