COOKEVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team saw its four-game win streak grind to a halt as the Lady Govs fell 3-1 at Tennessee Tech, Friday, in its Ohio Valley Conference opener. The loss drops the Lady Govs to 4-5 overall with a 0-1 conference mark, while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-5-2 with a 1-0 league mark.
“We played poorly all the way around,” Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth said. “We didn't control the game the way we're capable of doing and it showed. We got into a hole but played an optimistic second-half. By then, though, it was too little, too late.”
Austin Peay produced a steady offensive attack throughout the contest, outshooting Tennessee Tech 12-10, including a 7-4 second-half advantage. The Golden Eagles, however, managed to capitalize where the Lady Govs did not.
In fact, Tennessee Tech scored a pair of unanswered first-half goals to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Freshman Robin Reynolds netted the game's first goal off a rebound in the 16th minute and freshman Brooke Mayo headed in the second score in the 19th minute.
Lady Govs' junior Ashley Beck continued her consistent production, scoring her season's sixth goal in the 79th minute. Freshman Kellie Cannon delivered a cross to Beck, who scored it, narrowing the Tennessee Tech lead to one goal.
The Golden Eagles took advantage of a Lady Govs foul to extend their margin when Katie Hoover found the back of the net on a free kick for the game's final goal.
Loretta McNamee worked in net for Tennessee Tech, allowing one goal and making five stops. Lady Govs keeper Michelle Smith allowed a season-high three goals while making five saves.
Austin Peay returns to action with a 7 p.m., Monday match with Alabama A&M at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
