MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University men's tennis team was blanked in its season opener at Memphis, 7-0, Friday. The Govs fall to 0-1 overall, while the Tigers improved to 1-0.
The Govs played three close matches in the doubles competition but could not take the point. Austin Peay tandem of Lucas De Brito and Patrick Puertolas dropped their No. 2 doubles match, 9-7, while Leandro Toloso-Zenklusen and Leonardo Locatelli also fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
The Tigers carried their momentum into the singles competition allowing no more than four games to the Govs in a set. De Brito got off to strong start at No. 1 singles, but dropped the opening set 6-4. Memphis' Amrit Narasimham ? who was entered the match 98th in the preseason ITA rankings ? gathered ground and closed out the match with a, 6-2, second-set win.
Tolosa-Zenklusen was the next closest Govs player at No. 4 singles. The Argentina native lost to Jordan Smith in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Freshman Jay Wilkinson made his Govs debut at No. 5 singles, losing to Charlie Ramsay in straight sets.
Austin Peay returns to action, opening the home portion of its schedule with a 2 p.m., Tuesday, match against Cumberland.
