Austin Peay women's basketball team will seek to snap a five-game losing streak when it hosts Jacksonville State in a 5:15 p.m., Saturday, Ohio Valley Conference contest at the Dunn Center.
Saturday's contest will be available on radio in West Tennessee and Western Kentucky on WVRY 105.1 FM, Austin Peay's radio partner. Fans outside the listening area can catch the action on APSU's official athletics Web site, APSUGovernors.com.
The Lady Govs saw their losing streak hit five games following a 65-52 loss at Tennessee Tech, Thursday. Austin Peay's front court did its job, accounting for 44 points on 15-of-34 (44.1 percent) shooting from the field. Unfortunately, the Lady Govs back court recorded only six points on 3-of-21 (14.3 percent) field-goal shooting. Freshman forward Ashley Herring had 17 points in the losing effort. Sophomore Janay Armstrong added 10 points off the bench.
Herring has been the story in the early going, leading all league freshman in scoring (11th overall, 12.9 ppg) and ranking second among the league's freshmen in rebounding (12th, 5.8 rpg). In league action alone, she is eighth among all players in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game.
Jacksonville State visits Clarksville with four straight losses, including a 91-64 loss at then-No. 25 Colorado, Dec. 30. The Gamecocks led early in the first half but could not keep pace with the Buffaloes which led by as many as 30 points in the second half.
The Gamecocks and Lady Govs have two common opponents this season: Kennesaw State and Southern Miss. JSU lost at Kennesaw State but picked up the win at home against Southern Miss. APSU won at Kennesaw State but lost at Southern Miss.
Sophomore Jolie Efezokhae leads Jacksonville State with 12.7 points per game, 13th among OVC players. Freshman Cierra Duhart leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, eighth best in the OVC.
