CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team ended its Ohio Valley Conference season playing to a 1-1 tie against UT Martin, Sunday afternoon. The tie leaves the Lady Govs out of the postseason tournament for the second-straight year with a 4-11-3 overall record and a 1-4-3 league clip.
The Skyhawks (9-4-3, 4-2-2 OVC) lone goal came off a corner kick in the eighth minute. Kelley Ann Huthinson served up the corner and Danielle Rogers booted it in from five yards out. It was UT Martin's second corner in the first 10 minutes and it was the second shot faced by APSU's sophomore keeper
Carley Newman.
After that goal, Newman played tough for the next 100 minutes, making 13 saves as the Lady Govs allowed 21 more shots by the Skyhawks. Sophomores
Hannah Jones, Samantha Northrop and freshman
Sara Kluttz each played the full 110 minutes on the backline.
UT Martin held a 1-0 lead at the break and outshot the Lady Govs, 7-2, in the first half with a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks. The Skyhawks carried that momentum into the second half as they pounded 11 shots, leading to seven second-half saves for Newman. Austin Peay continued to battle and it would pay off.
As the clock ticked down, the intensity picked up for the Lady Govs in the attacking third. In the 85th minute, freshman
Rian Barger worked her way loose and fired a shot off the post. Sophomore
Monique Wong was there for the rebound and found the back of the net for her season's first goal, tying the game with fewer than five minutes to play.
In the first overtime, APSU freshman
Jocelyn Murdoch placed a shot on goal, but UTM keeper Johanna Rathbun came up with the save. Senior
Ashley Beck delivered the Lady Govs final offensive strike, but her shot, in the 99th minute, hit the crossbar. Newman secured the tie, making one save in the final overtime. The Skyhawks outshot the Lady Govs in that frame, 4-0.
Aside from Wong's goal on her only shot, Beck led Austin Peay with four shots, one on goal, while Murdoch, Northrop and Barger each had one shot. The Lady Govs finished with eight shots, three on goal. Newman's 13 saves are a career high, two better than her previous high set at Winthrop earlier this season.
While Rogers scored the goal for UT Martin, Melissa Govea led the way with six shots, five on goal. Rathburn finished with two saves in net.
Austin Peay wraps up its season on the road with a 6:30 p.m., Friday match at Belmont.
