CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's basketball
team suffered through a sub-30 percent shooting night and dropped its
home finale, 69-52, to Tennessee Tech, Saturday night, in Ohio Valley
Conference at the Dunn Center.
The Lady Govs fell to 5-20 overall, 2-14 in conference play and were
eliminated from OVC tournament consideration. The Golden Eagles
remained in the eighth spot in the standings, improving to 8-19 overall
and 7-10 in league action.
Tennessee Tech won despite losing Kristina Tyler ? its leading scorer ?
at the 14:22 mark of the first half due to an injury. Following the
injury, Tennessee Tech scored five straight points to take a 7-6 lead.
Austin Peay briefly regained the lead, 8-7, following a pair of
Ashley Herring free-throws at the 11:59 mark. Then Tennessee Tech went on a
22-11 run over the next 11:32 and led 29-19 with 17 seconds remaining.
A
Janay Armstrong three-point field goal as time expired narrowed the
halftime advantage to 29-22.
In the second half, Austin Peay would threaten in the opening 10
minutes and narrowed the lead to five points, 43-38, after
Alex Bivens'
three-point field goal with 10:57 remaining. But that was as close as
they would get as Austin Peay went the next 6:23 without a field goal,
including a 5:26 span in which it did not score a point. Meanwhile,
Tennessee Tech scored 14 straight points and led by 19 with 5:51
remaining, safely beyond APSU's reach.
Armstrong led Austin Peay with 11 points and 14 rebounds,
including nine offensive rebounds. Freshman
Ashley Herring added 10
points and five rebounds. Each of the Lady Govs 10 players scored in
the contest.
Austin Peay posted its worst shooting performance in more than a month,
making just 19-of-65 (29.2 percent) of its field goal attempts. That
shooting effort overshadowed an impressive night on the boards where
the Lady Govs grabbed 26 offensive rebounds on the way to a 45-34
rebounding edge. However, those 26 offensive boards translated into
only 20 second-chance points.
Blair Bowens led Tennessee Tech with a game-high 20 points, making
6-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, and
6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Allison Price added 11 points and
dished out six assists. All 10 of the Golden Eagles players scored in
the game.
Tennessee Tech was an impressive 23-of-52 (44.2 percent) from the
field, including 6-of-15 (40 percent) from three-point range. The
Golden Eagles added a 17-of-21 (81 percent) performance from the
free-throw line.
Austin Peay begins a season-ending four-game road trip with a 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, outing at league-leading Southeast Missouri.
