EVANSVILLE, Ind. ? An impressive combined pitching
performance by four pitchers helped Austin Peay State University post a 5-2
victory at Evansville, Wednesday night, in non-conference action at Braun
Stadium.
Austin Peay's (19-21) pitching
limited Evansville
to two runs on six hits while racking up 12 strikeouts. Starter Jason Stoermer
? making his season's first start ? picked up the victory after allowing one
run on five hits while striking out four over 5.1 innings. Relievers Matt Kole
and Ryne Mantooth combined to surrender just one run over the next 2.1 innings,
setting the scene for closer Daniel Tenholder who struck out three over the
final 1.1 innings for his season's eighth save.
The Govs offense saw its two through
six hitters each post an RBI. Right fielder Will Hogue hit a home run for the
second consecutive game, a solo shot in the second. First baseman Matt Kole's
sacrifice fly in the seventh provided the eventual winning run.
Evansville's offense threatened in the first,
loading the bases, but could not score as Stoermer got a strikeout to silence
the threat. He then retired 13 of the next 16 batters he faced before leaving
the scene in the sixth. The Purple Aces lone mark on the board came on
shortstop Andy Smith's two-run home run in the sixth.
Austin Peay returns to Ohio Valley
Conference play with a three-game series at Southeast
Missouri, Saturday and Sunday, at Capaha Field. The set gets
underway with a 1 p.m., Saturday, doubleheader before concluding with a 1 p.m.,
Sunday, contest.
