Lady Govs trample Lady Bisons for first win

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? After coming off a disappointing loss two days ago, the Austin Peay State University women's soccer team rebounded with a 2-0 victory against Lipscomb, Sunday night, at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field.

The Lady Govs drew first blood with an Ashley Beck goal in the 29th minute. A strong pass forward, got to sophomore Monique Wong who crossed the ball inside the goal box to Beck who punched it in for the goal. Lipscomb would see a golden opportunity to tie the game fall inches shy as a shot at goal hit the post and the shot off the ensuing rebound was saved by a Lady Govs player right at the goal line.

Both teams continued up-and-down the field with neither team posting a quality chance until the Lady Govs second score. Freshman Rian Barger shook off a defender, pivoted and fired from 18 feet for the insurance goal in the 77th minute.

Austin Peay dominated the offensive attack, posting 10 shots on goal against Lipscomb's two shots on net. Austin Peay goalkeeper Carley Newman was called on to make two saves for her first career shutout.

"We were disappointed with our performance Friday (at Alabama A&M)," said Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth. "We got everyone together on Saturday and talked about what was expected and got everyone focused on the task. I thought they did a good job tonight. We came out focused and ready to win tonight instead of trying not to lose."

Austin Peay returns to action with a 7 p.m., Friday, home contest against Chattanooga.
