Jaguars claw through Govs

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -Austin Peay men's basketball team suffered a 77-63 loss to IUPUI, Friday night in the Glenn Wilkes Classic played at the Ocean Center. The Govs fall to 1-2, while the Jaguars improve to 3-0 overall.

Things looked promising early in the game as the Govs jumped out to an 8-2 lead on a layup by sophomore Tyrone Caldwell at the 18:06 mark. As IUPUI's Robert Glenn and Leroy Nobles found their groove, the Jaguars chipped away and took their first lead at the 13:56 mark on Glenn's layup. Austin Peay junior Caleb Brown hit a layup to give the Govs a 20-16 lead at the 9:19 mark before IUPUI took over.

At the 7:40 mark, the Govs, leading 20-19, picked up their seventh team foul to put the Jaguars in the bonus. From that point, the Jaguars put together a 14-4 run that included 7 of 8 free throws, to take a 34-24 half-time lead.

In the first half, IUPUI turned nine Govs turnovers into 10 points and outscored the Govs, 20-14, in the paint. That trend continued in the second half as the Jags posted a 22-6, second-half, advantage in the paint.

Austin Peay cut IUPUI's lead to 10 points twice in the second half, sparked by a 10-point run by freshman Eric Mosley. The Louisville native hit a pair of threes and made 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, to cut it to 69-59 with 1:34 left in the game. However, the sharp-shooting Jaguars would not go away, making 15 of 24 (62.5 percent) from the floor in the final stanza.

Three Govs scored in double-figures, led by Mosley's 12 points off the bench. Sophomore Anthony Campbell and Caldwell each had 11 points, while sophomore John Fraley finished with seven points and 12 rebounds. Senior Wesley Channels finished with four points.

Austin Peay hit 20-of-63 (31.7 percent) from the floor, while IUPUI made 26-of-52 (50 percent) field goals.

IUPUI's Alex Young led all scorers with 20 points, while Glenn added 17. Jon Avery and Nobles each scored 11 points.

It doesn't get easier for the Govs as they face Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina State in a 7:15 p.m. (CST), Saturday, game at the Ocean Center.
