Rough first inning lifts Hawkeyes over Govs

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ?  Austin Peay State University's baseball team lost 10-3 to Iowa, Thursday night, in its final non-conference tilt before opening Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend.

Austin Peay (8-10) fell behind early after a six-run first inning by the Hawkeyes. Govs starter Ryne Mantooth allowed back-to-back singles to lead off the game. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, the Govs issued an intentional walk to set up a force out. However, back-to-back hit batsmen plated two runs. Consecutive singles and a passed ball plated two more runs before the Govs could induce a fly out to end the inning.

Greg Bachman laced a one-out double down the left-field line and scored on a wild pitch in the Govs half of the first inning. It was the first of three runs scored by the Govs sophomore third baseman.

Iowa (5-9) scored three more runs in the top of the second inning, setting a 9-1 deficit that Austin Peay could not overcome.

In the third inning, Bachman singled through the right side to lead off. He moved to second base on a wild pitch and Adam Browett singled up the middle to move him to third. Bachman scored on a double play, cutting the lead to 9-2.

Bachman drew a walk in the eighth inning and worked his way around the bases without the benefit of a Governors hit. He reached second on a passed ball, third after a walk and a hit-by-pitch, and scored on a passed ball.

Both teams went to their bullpens early in the game.

The Govs bullpen settled in when left-hander Stephen Huff took the mound in the third inning, throwing 1.2 hitless innings while striking out one. Freshman Lucas Anderson pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Senior Jacob Brisbin allowed the Hawkeyes late run in 2.0 innings of work. Sophomore Dylan Ray and junior Daniel Tenholder combined for 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Mantooth (1-3) incurred the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in one inning.

Jarred Hippen picked up the win for Iowa, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing only one hit. Three Hawkeyes combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing one run on two walks, while striking out four.

Bachman led the Govs at the plate, scoring all three Austin Peay runs in going 2-for-3 with a walk. Trey Lucas added a 2-for-4 effort with a double.

Austin Peay returns to action hosting OVC rival Eastern Kentucky in a 1 p.m., Saturday, doubleheader at Raymond C. Hand Park. The Govs and Colonels close out the season with a 1 p.m., Sunday, game.
