MOREHEAD, Ky. ? The road remains unkind for Austin Peay State University's baseball team as it dropped both ends of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader, 3-1 and 3-1, Saturday, at Morehead State.
Austin Peay (14-20, 2-6 OVC) managed just three hits in the first seven-inning contest. First baseman Matt Kole had two of the hits, including a solo home run in the fourth to account for the Govs lone run.
Morehead State (12-19, 5-6) didn't fare much better with just four hits in the opener, but took advantage of two Austin Peay defensive miscues to score three times. A Govs error in the second led to a run and a misplayed line drive ultimately led to two more runs.
Govs starter Ryne Harper (3-2) suffered the loss despite holding the Eagles to three runs (two earned) on four hits in 5.1 innings.
Morehead State starter Tyler Bess (4-2) picked up the victory and tossed his third straight complete game, holding APSU to one run on three hits while striking out five.
The second game saw Austin Peay put plenty of runners on base ? stranding 12 on the base paths ? but could not find a key hit. The Govs capitalized on an error in the first for their lone run, but left the bases loaded. They left a runner on in scoring position in the second, third and sixth innings.
The Eagles were held in check by APSU starter Daniel Tenholder, who was making his first collegiate start, through the first two innings. In the third, Morehead State put four consecutive runners on base, finishing with a two-run double from designated hitter Michael Bottoms followed by an RBI-single from left fielder Daniel Pugh for their three runs.
Tenholder (2-2) was tagged for the loss after allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings.
Morehead State starter Jeff Arnold (4-0) picked up the victory after holding APSU to one unearned run on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Bottoms came on in the sixth and picked up his season's first save with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings.
Kole finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with an RBI, going 2-for-2 in the first game followed by a 2-for-4 effort in game two. Shortstop Jon Clinard went 3-for-4 in the day's second game.
Bottoms went 2-for-7 but had three RBI to lead Morehead State's offense.
Austin Peay returns to action when it hosts Western Kentucky in a 6 p.m., Tuesday, contest at Raymond C. Hand Park.
