Big inning dooms Govs in loss at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team saw its season-best four-game win streak end in a flurry surrendering seven runs in the seventh inning to homestanding Evansville in a  9-5 loss, Wednesday night, at Braun Stadium.

After four scoreless innings, Austin Peay (14-18) got on the scoreboard first with five runs in the fifth. The first five batters of the frame each posted a hit ? centerfielder Michael Blanchard posting a RBI single and leftfielder Adam Browett ending the streak with a two-run double. Designated hitter Stephen Huff ? making his first start as a hitter ? batted in a run with a fielders choice and saw another run cross the plate courtesy a wild throw, giving APSU a 5-0 lead.

Evansville (13-16) dented that advantage in its half of the fifth, scoring two runs on third baseman Cody Fick's single.

Neither team scratched the board again until Evansville's game-breaking seventh frame. The Purple Aces sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven times. APSU reliever Brian Bernatowicz opened the inning with a strikeout. He struck out the next batter he faced, but a wild pitch permitted the hitter to reach safely. After an infield single, Bernatowicz seemed to regain his composure with a RBI groundout for the inning's second out.

However, the Purple Aces weren't finished as the next five batters each reached base safely. Leftfielder Greg Wallace followed the second out with a run-scoring double. But it was centerfielder Alex Acheson's RBI single that scored Wallace for the game-tying run. First baseman Andy Pascoe pushed across the go-ahead run with another single. A passed ball and a balk each pushed across runs before second baseman Trentt Copeland ended the scoring with a RBI double, chasing Bernatowicz. Lucas Anderson came on in relief and induced a fly out to end the frame.

Bernatowicz (0-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits over two-thirds of an inning. Starter Jacob Brisbin held Evansville scoreless over four innings, striking out four and allowing just three hits.

Browett led the Govs offense with a 3-for-5, two RBI performance. Rightfielder Jared DeLong also added three hits.

Evansville reliever Jared Baehl (1-1) picked up the victory after allowing one unearned run over 3.2 innings and striking out five. Fick led the Purple Aces with a 2-for-5, three RBI outing.

Austin Peay continues its road trip with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Morehead State. The series begins with a noon (CDT), Friday doubleheader due to the upcoming Easter holiday.
