Box Score 3 CHATTANOOGA - Senior Caleb Brown buried a
three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left, giving the Austin Peay State University
men's basketball team a 70-67 road win at Chattanooga, Monday night.
The game was tied seven times during the
final four minutes, the last coming at 67-all after a corner three by
Chattanooga's Omar Wattad with 30 seconds to play. The Govs called a timeout
with 25 seconds left to organize for the final shot and with the clock winding
down, Brown knocked down the game-winner from the right-elbow.
Chattanooga's (0-2) desperation attempt was
thwarted by junior Josh Terry at midcourt.
Terry led three Governors in double-figures
with 17 points, to go along with seven rebounds and three steals. Junior
Anthony Campbell came alive with 15 points, all in the first half, but was
limited to only two shot attempts in the final half. Junior Tyshwan Edmondson
added 14 points and six rebounds, while junior John Fraley had seven points and
11 boards.
The Govs (2-0) and Mocs traded the lead eight
times during the first half, Austin Peay doing much of its damage from behind
the arc. Behind Campbell and Edmondson, the Govs hit six of their eight
three-pointers in the opening frame.
A layup by Edmondson with 7:14 to play set
the tone for a Govs push into the break. The Mocs were held in check thanks to
good defense and free-throw shooting over the final seven minutes. During that
stretch, Austin Peay forced four turnovers and made 6-of-8 from the line, to
take a 40-36 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Govs lead grew as
large as seven points early after five straight points from junior Melvin Baker
over the first three minutes. However, an 11-4 Chattanooga run over a
three-minute span put the Mocs head 54-52 with 9:45 to play.
But again, the Govs hustled back into it,
forcing three turnovers and scoring five fast-break points to take a four-point
lead, 63-59, with 5:31 left. Chattanooga would not let the Govs pull away as
Chris Early went on a five-point run of his own, to even the game at 63-all -
the game's sixth tie - with 3:36 left.
The two teams traded free throws, before
giving way to Brown's final shot.
Josh Odem led Chattanooga with 15 points,
while Early added 11 and Ricky Taylor, 10. As a team, the Mocs shot 43 percent
(26 of 60) from the floor, while Austin Peay made only 24 of 61 (39.3 percent).
Austin Peay continues its season-opening
nine-game road trip with game three, a 7:15 p.m., Thursday game at Lipscomb.
